And, yes, I am retiring!
It's time to call it a career :-) It has been an honour to work with hundreds of children over several decades. Each child was unique in ability, interests, background, ... and so much more! I learned as much from them as they did (hopefully!) from me. I always tried my best to present lessons and provide experiences to help the students acquire the skill-sets necessary for success in life. So often I wished that there were more hours in the day to prepare additional lessons ... sigh ... I plan on doing some supply work in the school next year, so I look forward to seeing the faces of lots of students in many different classes then! |

Why Learn Cursive Writing?
Having students learn cursive writing has many advantages:
- Different hand muscles are used for cursive that for printing
- Helps to develop fine motor skills
- Using manuscript printing, as well as cursive, gives students two chances and two visuals to learn how to spell new words
- To learn how to create a written signature for cheques, legal documents, etc.
- To be able to read letters from people whose preference is to write notes by hand in cursive
- To connect to the past by being able to read handwritten historical documents
- Cursive is an art form, which helps to develop the creative, artistic side of the brain
- Fluent cursive writing is quicker than printing
- Printing is stop-start for each letter; words are written as one unit in cursive, increasing attention span
Students who have difficulty with printing neatness and spelling accuracy greatly benefit from cursive writing:
- Because all lowercase letters start on the line, students don't have to remember where each new letter starts
- Students are less likely to have letter reversals (e.g. b, d, p, & q) because they look different in cursive
- Because letters in a word are connected, the beginnings and endings of words is more clear
In fact, many students benefit from learning cursive early on, even first, because
they learn to form letters correctly the first time!
